Can't Figure This One Out

I parked nearby to take some photos of the spectacular trees at peak color (see extra).  Then I noticed the photographer and his two gumball machines that he repositioned twice.  Any ideas what he's up to?

Extras include some unexpected shots throughout the day...the first is in the distance where the photographer was shooting, two from the fishing pond (doesn't she look bored???), and one while driving to run errands.
