Memorial Ver-sur-Mer

This morning we went to pay our respects to the many thousands of names on the D Day Memorial.  There were very few people visiting and the atmosphere made a deep impression on us.  I tried to find the name of the father of a friend, a Royal Marine,  who was killed on the beach and whom she had never met as she was yet to be born.  There are so many thousands of names and so many pillars it was impossible. There is also a memorial to the French and the French Resistance members who were killed.  Ver-sur-Mer was the bridgehead of the British offensive. See extras.

A croque-monsieur for lunch.

In the afternoon we arrived at Pegasus Bridge at Benouville.  This is where the British 6th Airborne Division, the first to set foot in Normandy, landed in their gliders.   They took control of the important bridges, Pegasus being one of them.  The bridge standing today on the main road is a replica and we were fortunate enough to see it in operation letting a vessel pass on its way downstream.  The museum there is also very worthwhile visiting.
