Passionate?
'Passionate' is one of those words that have become increasingly used to describe personal or corporate commitment to the most mundane or functional activities and, as a result, has simply become an empty cliché. That said, until yesterday at the Tunbridge Wells Hollywood Bowl, I had never seen it used to elevate a venue's responsibility to ensure its customers were provided with clean toilet facilities to the realms of 'passion'. I was surprised that they did not continue the cliché theme by inviting customers to 'reach out' to a member of staff if the toilets were 'below their standards' (not that the standards were listed anywhere to enable one to make such a judgement). I am pleased to report, despite my indignation at this latest debasement of a word that should only be used for callings or experiences that excite true passion, that the toilets were reassuringly clean. Not that I can say the same of my bowling performance which was very below par - perhaps I should be more passionate!
