October
I saw a little more of Toruń today. Not as much as I expected (see below) but enough.
The old city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site so I felt a duty to Blip a part of it - a statue of Copernicus (born here) in front of the old town hall. That was after lunch and the sun had broken through the fog by then.
Talking of lunch, I spoiled myself by eating at a traditional cafeteria. It is like a student refectory or work canteen. It was fabulous. Schnitzel with sauerkraut and mashed potato. 49 pln (£9.40) with an iced tea. It is in the Extras.
It was my reward for completing my first Parkrun in Poland and my 100th overall. The course is lovely - totally flat and all of it through woodland. The fog made it atmospheric, but prevented me seeing anything on the way out through the suburbs (taxi) or back (tram).
Taking the tram was more of an achievement than the run. There was no ticket machine at the stop so I had to buy at the machine on the moving tram, carefully located at the bit which swivels at corners. It rejected my card twice, so I had to coax some sweaty coins out of my sweaty shorts. It worked, but one coin escaped and was chased along the tram by a Polish lady. After all that - and remembering to validate the ticket at another machine - I was expecting the other passengers to applaud.
Maybe they were too polite.
