Battle Abbey
The battle of Hastings (1066) was not actually fought in Hastings, but just outside Hastings in what is now apptly named Battle. This is where William’s forces battled and conquered King Harold’s forces in a long and bloody battle. The Abbey was founded and largely endowed by King William in about 1071. It was established as a memorial to the dead of the battle and as atonement for the bloodshed of the Conquest.
We visited Battle after a morning walking along the coast from Hastings to Bexhill and back through St Lennards. We actually walked passed the Hastings rowing club (see extra).
