Beech Trees in Mist

The next few days are supposed to be offering us some misty conditions and certainly that's how it started on the Chase.  However, within a few minutes of taking this shot it was raining and the mist had disappeared.  I hung around for a bit but if anything the rain only got harder, despite the rain app saying there was none expected.

I headed for some shelter, before driving up to one of the highest points on the Chase, Castle Ring.  This is an ancient Iron Age hill fort, believed to have been populated by the Cornovii tribe, which roughly translated means 'people of the horn' and it was assumed they worshiped a horned god.  There is a belief that the Horn dance still done every year in the nearby village of Abbots Bromley, comes from a pagan ritual associated with the tribe.

The ancient word Cnoc, meaning a high place, is believed to be the derivation for the name Cannock, which is the major town in the area.  I put the drone up to capture the fort and was surprised to see that from the angle I photographed, the fort looks to have a heart shape.
