Totnes Motte and Bailey
This was the quickest ascent of what is supposed to be one of the finest examples of a Motte and Bailey Castle in Great Britain. Exploring the rest of the town had left little time before the train was due to leave.. The mound has been in place for 900 years but it still has an impressive defensive steepness that proves its Norman builders were all ultra-fit.
Breathing heavily, I reached the top of the steps and clambered up to the top of the wall for a cursory look at the view. Deb had unfortunately booked her visit on-line in a hurry - for the wrong day - and was still at the bottom explaining to the custodian. She arrived up just as I was leaping down again.
It was a quick trot to the station with 10 minutes to spare.
Then the length of England to traverse - back up to Cumbria again.
