finally we have rain

damp wet gentle steady drippy rain

the kind that gets everything wet
but somehow you're happy to be out in

the kind that quietly soaks through the soil
not washes it away

the kind that makes the swallows sit on the gate and yawn
whilst watching for moths dodging the drops

the kind that eventually makes kids
come indoors and watch old movies

the stuff that makes puddles
not floods

the stuff that shorts and wellies
were invented for

the type of rain that refills our pond
and freshens our sun tired skin

the type of rain we welcome for a day or so
