Ertie's Saat Fish
A mild day again, mostly cloudy, the odd shower and breezy at times.
Up early, headed to work. Another day working on the toon essykert, with Philip and James. A heavy load of black bag waste, 20 tonnes lifted, mostly residential. Walkies with Sammy after work. Headed out to see some bonfires this evening. There sure isn't as many as there used to be, also my photos were rubbish. Mam popped by for a cuppa. Watched the new Billy and Molly movie, a Shetland man and his otter. Last walkies before bed. 24,400 steps before the walk.
Arrived back to the tea-hut for our morning break. Ertie came in not long after, carrying a bucket of fish. The fish was saat (salt) whitings. The fish is put in a salt solution, then hung to dry, originally to preserve over the winter months, before the days of the freezer. Some still love the taste of saat fish, personally, yuck, not for me. Ertie was saying there's a good sook (suction) running through the building, drying the fish well. Ertie (Arthur) Burgess hanging the fish in the crane store, Esplanade, Lerwick.
