Anglesea
Today Robbie drove us to Newport, Rhode Island, playground of the wealthy. We did the Cliff Walk where one has the ocean to the left and late 19th century mansions to the right. The latter represent the obsession people who had made vast fortunes in a developing America had with showing off their wealth through their OTT abodes. The Vanderbilt pile is here.
In my view the most modest and elegant is Anglesea. Built in 1880 in the Gothic Revival style, it was expanded in 1896 by the Person family who made their fortune in the sarsaparilla industry.
My extra shows Anglesea's conservatory by the walk's path.
