Borderlines Bookclub

Usual busy Wednesday. Market, art group and once a month I have my Bookclub meeting. The second this week. We had not met last month and had read a particularly long book this time. The book being discussed today was Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. It was a retelling of Dickens’ David Copperfield set in Virginia. I enjoyed the first third, where he was growing up , but found it hard to follow as I got further through. This is sometimes a problem with audio books where characters appear and do something but you don’t realise it’s a different character and with a book you can look back and sort it out. It’s harder to do with audio. It’s setting in modern day Virginia, with drug abuse joining poverty as part of the problem does work, but I found the unremitting awfulness of most of the characters a bit wearing. It receives huge amounts of praise so don’t let me put you off it!
