Lime Kilns at Canoe Creek / Fabulous Breakfast
It was another unseasonably warm November day, and we decided to go to breakfast at the Eat 'n Park in Altoona, followed by an afternoon of exercise and fresh air at Canoe Creek State Park. My husband wanted to jog, and I wanted just a little more time with those lime kilns and the lake.
We made it to Eat 'n Park in good time, and I had a delightful breakfast that is called the Senior Super Griddle Smile. I chose bacon (on the crispy side), eggs sunny side up, mini potato cakes, and Italian toast. As my extra item, I ordered a grilled sticky, which I took along to enjoy later. (See photo in the extras, and YES, I am also drooling looking at my picture - it was fabulous!)
When we got to Canoe Creek, my husband dropped me off at the educational center, where I picked up two more John Sandford books at the Little Free Library there, gave them to him, and then took off for the lime kilns, which you may see above. (Lime kiln history lesson here.)
The lime kilns . . . it's hard to explain, but as a photographic subject, they're sort of simple, and yet at the same time, challenging to photograph in any sort of creative way. They're just so BIG and there's that whole ROW of them, and the lighting is just sort of weird inside. But I do enjoy them, and I did my best, so here's a photo of the kilns.
I walked out onto the boardwalk that follows the Lake Trail for at least part of the way out, and found some nice views from a duck blind there. As I was taking photos, totally intent on my subject, somebody passed by me on the boardwalk, and I apologized for being in his way.
It turned out that the guy who nearly mowed me over was my husband, jogging by! We had a good laugh over that! I walked back along the lake, listening to some fine music on my tunes box. We eventually met back at the car, and went for a lovely wade in the water of the lake. It felt like summer all over again. Summer in November.
I've got two photos so here are two songs: for the row of lime kilns, here is Gerry Rafferty's Right Down the Line. For the fabulous breakfast in the extras, I've got the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Here's one of my favorite songs of theirs, from the 1988 film Cocktail, Powerful Stuff.
P.S. Words of wisdom: Happiness is an act of insurrection.
