Seeking my healing place!
Thursday
A somewhat different day today. This morning I went to a new (to me) Bible study, which I have been thinking of joining for a while, but I kept thinking I would wait until they started a new study, but then I never seemed to keep track of when that was! So today I decided I would just go anyway, and sure enough, they are coming toward the end of their current book, No wonder they call him the Savior, by Max Lucado, quite a prolific Christian writer. There were a number of people missing from their usual number apparently, so there were six of us today. I knew all but one, and I knew her facially, but have never got to speak to her before.
In the afternoon R and I decided to get out into nature - my “healing place” - and go walking at Rowe Woods, where we still found some autumn colour, though it’s mainly just the beeches and oaks now. On the way though, we had some errands to run. The first was the library to return two books, and pick up one I’d had on hold. The second was the charity organisation St. Vincent de Paul. Roger’s been doing some sorting out this week in the unfinished part of our basement which is where the furnace is, since tomorrow our heating and cooling guy, Tony, is coming to install a new one, plus a new air-conditioning unit, and needs some space to work! That’s a problem with having a basement, you tend to put no longer used things down there out of sight, rather than sorting as you go! On the other hand, having a basement is a reassuring place to have when stormy weather is around and the possibility of tornadoes! Tony, is the same person we’ve had ever since we moved into the house - in fact he put the last furnace in, which is 30 years old! He’s been telling us for about the last five years whenever he comes to give the heating/air conditioning it’s seasonal service, that it’s time to get a new one as it’s been living on borrowed time for a long time! However, they don’t come cheap, so we’ve kept putting it off. However, we decided this was the time, before winter really descends upon us!
Those two errands completed, we continued on to Rowe Woods. As we walked there was the constant scampering sounds of squirrels up in the trees or rustling through the fallen leaves, finding our burying nuts I guess. We also came across a couple of new art installations, one of which is shown in the top left of my collage
In the evening it was back to hand bells- we’d had the last two weeks off since Gloria was in Florida visiting family. That was followed by a mini choir session. Our choir has split into two sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening as we always have done. The reason for this came about since a couple of our members, husband and wife, no longer feel happy driving in the dark. However, we are only a fairly small choir in the first place, particularly the men. In fact Roger is currently one of two tenors, the other one being one that doesn’t want to drive at night. So he went to practice this morning, but I was going this evening, and since Roger was going to be at hand bells, he stayed for practice again! Sorry, I know it sounds a bit complicated! So this evening, we had two sopranos, Sandy and Donna, Sandy being the only one in the choir who is still working, me as the lone alto, Roger as the lone tenor and Michael, our director the lone bass! We meet before service for a rehearsal together, where we are joined by a couple of men from the Praise band to help swell the men’s voices. This is only the second time we have done it this way, and we didn’t go last week since we were going to be away at the weekend. I’m not particularly happy with the arrangement, as we’re losing some of the fellowship aspect, but we shall see how it goes! Hope I haven’t bored you too much!
