A busy and nice day
In the morning I met my friend G at the Royal West of England Academy to see their annual open exhibition. They invite submissions from the south west, and beyond, and whittle them down to make a fabulous show of about 500 items. Some wonderful prints and paintings - we played “what would you buy?” G chose a painting of walking by the river Severn, power stations and all. So we’ve planned to go. One exhibit really made me laugh - a video of a person - you just see the legs - walking along a path - instead of wearing shoes, their feet are inserted in different loaves of bread.
A bus took me right across to east Bristol to meet C - I think I mentioned before she bought a fixer upper house which would have overwhelmed me. After lunch in a cafe, we went to her house - I was so impressed with the progress she’s made in the kitchen, bathroom, and living room. She’s done amazing plastering! She was pleased to hear how incredibly different I found it - I guess she doesn’t sense the change so clearly when she does a bit each day.
There’s a nice way for me to walk home from hers - up, up, up through the cemetery at the back of my house. By the gate at the top is a community garden - and among the plants still looking nice, this fuchsia was the loveliest.
In the evening, I went to see Blitz. There have been some sneering reviews - but I feel they just didn’t get it. I think it’s an amazing film - about the incredible journey of a black child who escapes from the evacuation train, and tries to find his way back to his mum, negotiating racism, some very bad people, some indifferent people; he meets a black guardian angel, and a black woman who isn’t what she seems. Saoirse Roman is fabulous as the mum in agony as her son is missing, and the young actor playing the boy is astonishing. It’s directed by Steve McQueen who did Small Axe, 12 years a Slave, Hunger. It’s very clearly a film through black eyes, and very powerful.
