Eleventh Hour, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Month

I took Mish to the village to observe the two-minute silence and remember the fallen. She watched from the van as I stood alone in the beautiful sunshine by the war memorial. I was touched by an image of a young local man who died on 5th November 1918. (Extras)

A carpet of knitted poppies had been placed by the lych-gate with a vintage disc harrow and stick or tooth drag harrow. I think these used to be pulled by horses. I remember a stick harrow being at our nursery when I was a child, though I never saw it used. Poppies grow on disturbed land which is why they proliferated on the Great War battlegrounds and were chosen as a symbol of remembrance. I presume the people of the village wanted their display to look as though the poppies had grown after the land had been harrowed. Micah 4:3 came to mind. And he shall judge among many peoples, and reprove strong nations, even afar off; and they shall forge their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-knives: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. I had to include the image of a Hughes 369E in extras, it's the best I have ever got of this machine.
