Repair
After the usual inconsequential chat and coffee Phil and I went through the back to where the mixer and amp live to try out the little valve pre-amp he'd built. Sounded nice. Attention turned to Ewan's Gameboy. He was telling me yesterday that some years ago he'd tried to modify it with a new backlit screen using my old soldering iron and in the process had busted it so I took it away to have a look and see if it could be fixed.
The problem seemed straightforward. In the course of soldering it he'd burned through the traces on the circuit board so two pins were now no longer connected. Not surprising really. The iron he was using was an old thing with a broad tip not really suited to small joints on little boards. He was probably also using lead-free solder, which is just useless. So, decent attempt using unsuitable tools.
Cleaned it up and jumped over the broken traces with little wires and it's working again, which just leaves the question of why he wants it.
