Autumnal walk in the London suburbs
Today we completed another section of the London Loop walk. We started this section (Hatch End to Elstree)on a very hot summer's day at the end of July. This morning, it was a good deal cooler ( 9C) but sunny. The photo is of "Brewery Pond" on Stanmore Common in the London borough of Harrow. It is an artificially created pond, which was constructed to supply the former, Georgian, Clutterbucks brewery. The Common was looking very attractive today in the sun. Apparently, it has an interesting flora including the only Heath Spotted orchids in London!
The walk then took us into Hertfordshire, and around Aldenham reservoir, which was originally excavated by French POW's in 1795, to provide water for the nearby Grand Union Canal and River Colne, as well as drinking water. Now it is becoming an informal nature reserve, and is part of the Aldenham Country Park.
In total, today we walked about 6 miles. (We've now completed 30miles of the 150 mile Loop walk.)
We finished at Elstree station and caught a bus back to Bushey station, where we had parked our car,. Then we drove to the home of my aunt's best friend, A, who lives nearby, to catch up with her and her daughter. It was very good to see them again. My aunt and A were like sisters, so we and A now regard eachother as extended family.
