Horrendous Day
What a day!
Don’t read if you get squeamish about D & V!
Woke up around 7 and went to toilet and turned on the shower. Turned it right off again as needed to urgently go to the loo if you get my meaning….. this went on, intermittently. Got dressed, went for a cuppa, told Ben he couldn’t have a shower as I needed a clear run….. wondered about getting home, at this present time it seemed impossible…. Spoke to Andreas who arrived at 8. The room was free if I needed an extra night. But then there was no direct flights back to Scotland on Tuesday. Time passed, packed my rucksack, Ben packed his. We decided on Imodium to stop this (never used them before) so Ben went round to the chemist nearby that didn’t open till 9.
The flight home was at 12:40. Conscious of how late I could leave the place. Took the Imodium, took fluids, chatted with Andreas and asked if I could come back if it didn’t work out and that was fine.
Decided I needed to go for it and by now it was 10:20. Stomach seemed better. We got the vaporetto at the end of the street and two stops to the stop at the bus station. There was a taxi sitting so jumped in that for the 20 min drive to the airport. Wasn’t too busy so through security without any incidents. Bought a couple bottles of water to replace all the lost fluids and it was time to go through to departure for boarding. We just sat till last minute as only have the rucksacks no need to fight for the overhead bin space or stand in the line.
Sat down and thankful no need for the loo again. About an hour into the flight I started to feel really ropey. Felt hot and faintish. I went down the aisle to the loo as thought was going to be sick. Came out of loos and had to lie down right at the front as felt was going to pass out. Got sick bags from the crew and then had four bouts of projectile vomit. The bags aren’t that long and the first one was almost overflowing with the amount of water! Stewardess went on the phone asking if there was a medical professional on board, me sprawled on the floor at front of plane. A young lady who was a nurse arrived then Roger, an anaesthetist. The nurse sat back down at her seat as she didn’t speak English but came to see if she could help and then Rodger sat down beside me. Told him about earlier and of course we knew it was the Norovirus. The head stewardess had just got over it and Rodger had it five weeks ago. It’s been a while since I’ve felt so dam ill with this virus! Prob around 2016!
Went back to seat as thought felt bit better. Got up and went to loo about 10 mins later as felt it starting up again. Felt faint again and lay down on the floor and then the stewardess was holding up my legs as I lay down at the front. Was sick again. The nice guy in no 3 seat at the front row said he would move to the spare in row 4 so I could sit on his seat at the front near loos and staff. Very kind of him, I appreciated that, So I stayed there rest of flight. My lower back was aching, I was shivering and said to the stewardess I didn’t think I could walk off the plane down the steps and then stand through Passport Control (which is usually mobbed) as felt so weak. I kept thinking of my bed! There was already a wheelchair booked for another person so she asked the captain if he would phone and book one for me. Omg I just wanted to be at home. All this drama and feeling shit. I said I was sorry for all the fuss and she said this is what we are here for. The crew were so kind, so understanding and helpful. They were Air Malta for Ryanair and I could not praise them enough. Particularly the chief one and the young lad covering the front of cabin.
At last it was landing time and right on cue as we landed , and people were filing past me, I was throwing up into the bags again….. the Captain came out to ask how I was but I could only look and shiver.
Once everyone had disembarked went to the back of the plane with Ben and was taken off on some machine and on a little bus then a wheelchair through to PC which was no empty. Ben pushed the chair through to pick up and drop off where S was getting us. Of course he was oblivious to all this happening on the flight, only knew about the morning session on the loo!!
I am so thankful for the kindness of the staff, the two that answered the call for a medical professional and the Italian man who gave up his seat for me.
I shivered all the way home. Threw up again as got home .
S filled three hot water bottles I put on fresh joggers and a top and had my duvet and four blankets on me . I was never so glad to be in my own bed. I’m glad I got home but if the vom had started at the guest house I wouldn’t have managed. Thankful the other part had stopped!
Slept all night, felt so weak.
