Playtime
Playtime with grainy phone images from last night. So although I made this mage today, the raw material is from yesterday.
Last night Richard and I went to a Sheffield Jazz gig at Crookes Social Club, not far from home. The band was Soft Machine: a long-time favourite of R's. My mental music catalogue is nowhere near as comprehensive as his, so I wasn't sure what to expect.
What a gig! Band membership has ebbed and flowed since Soft Machine first got going in 1966. But the jazz/rock feel, and the inventive compositions, have been constant features. The gig was sold out, and the hall was full of enthusiastic fans... mostly, like us, old enough to remember 1966. The drummer - Asaf Sirkis - was particularly inspiring. John Etheridge, the one survivor of the band's early days, combined extraordinary guitar playing with a series of funny exchanges with the audience. He reminisced about the '60s and '70s: "we never spoke to the audience then! Not a word!"
We left feeling both relaxed and energised, and clutching a CD of course. It'll get plenty of air time.
I recommend a browse on the band's website:
