Speedup
Having worked for a long time yesterday, I got up a bit later and gave Django a longer walk before heading into work for a supervision meeting with my year 4 student. Once again, he'd made some positive progress on his own, made a couple of errors that I fixed, and he saw that I refined what he should do when I saw his preliminary results.
I then analysed the results of the experiment I ran overnight, refined the code I was working on, and got it to generate more data to inform the final part of the development. Hence I missed out on having lunch with PhD student Y, but had coffee with my old colleague K.
Later, PhD student B came in and we had a brief chat about something I'd asked him to investigate. He and Y have been busy preparing their case study for the modelling course that they will present this afternoon, so research has taken a back seat. However, it's clear that they've appreciated my asking them to take this course.
Afterwards, I verified that my work over the past couple of days has speeded up HiGHS on an important instance from "getting nowhere in 3.5 hours", to solving it in 250 seconds. A satisfying outcome.
