But for the duration of the Verbier Music Festival, this church is also the second main concert venue. Seats are not numbered so there's always a scramble for the best places. There's always a marvellous atmosphere.

I'm going to see Rufus Wainwright there this evening and that will be my first 2013 visit. In previous years I've heard some amazing concerts.

The main concert hall, Salle des Combins, is taken down after the festival. It's huge and seats 1700, steeply raked. It's comfortable but hot and when it thunders its really dramatic and sometimes they've delayed the start (as with Joshua Bell two years ago).

This structure replaced the old one by the cable car at Medran. That one was impossible when it rained. Lang Lang had to wait 45 minutes to start in 2009.

But this is Verbier and we don't usually get wall to wall sunshine :-)
