Penguin Droppings

Purple

Finally, a purple sandpiper, Calidris maritima, at Seafield.  A rather distant shot because the tide wasn't in, so a big crop down to 1600 x 1200 pixels.  Rather grainy as well because of the high ISO setting necessitated by the weather getting dull as rain aproached.

This wader is about the same size as a turnstone. That is, much smaller than a redshank and larger than a sanderling.

I asked a birding friend why they were called 'purple'.  He said that in summer plumage and under certain light conditions, the feathers have a slight purple sheen.

You might find what you expected in the 'extras'.
