We are in Fremantle...

...or "Freo" as it is known locally, for a couple of days. Freo is the port of Perth and was initially built by convicts.  Our hotel is called "Wardens" and it was the lodging of the wardens of Freo's Convict Establishment, now called Fremantle Prison. The prison is one of the main tourist sites of Fremantle and we did an interesting tour this afternoon.  It was a fairly brutal place even though it was for petty criminals who were sent here to build the colony. The mainly late 19th century buildings all around the town are beautifully restored and repurposed (extra).  Our room is the set of double windows in the thumbnail.

Before we visited the prison we took the local train into Perth and spent a couple of hours in the wonderful Art Gallery of Western Australia.  Last time we were in Melbourne we fell in love with some wild grass animals made by First Nation artists in Alice Springs but somehow didn't manage to take one home. So we were delighted to find some in the museum's design shop and I now need to find room in my luggage for a 35cm long lime green "dog" :-)

P.S. Apologies for the lack of comments. I hope to catch up when we settle down.
