Approximating Infrared

It’s a beautiful wintery Thursday. Blue skies are interspersed with little fluffy clouds (there’s a song about that) and warm-looking sunlight that belies the definite chill in the air. A quick run into Canterbury to drop the boys off was ‘livened up’ with a sudden traffic jam and blue lights in the distance. But it quickly turned into a fist-pump moment when I spotted a narrow country lane I could whizz down before we hit the traffic, then managed to drive past the whole obstruction and merge back onto the A2 in just a couple of minutes. It’s the little victories…

After the school run, I walked a few kilometres along the nearby country lanes. Beautiful and photogenic, but I forgot to bring gloves, and the air was bitterly cold. Plenty of photographs needed taking, and I particularly like this one of Singledge Lane. My old Fujifilm infrared camera—a converted X-E1—sadly died a few months ago, but I had fun trying to approximate the appearance of the infrared look in editing. The key is to be subtle with this… if you push it too far, you can wind up with horrendous artefacts!
