Temporary substitute?
There are no berries whatsoever on the ancient holly tree at the bottom of our garden, which at this time of the year is usually absolutely covered with them, and is the source of some welcome food for the redwings when they arrive. It would appear that last year was a bumper year for berries, and holly bushes often have a ‘rest year’ if they produced an abundant crop the previous year.
I haven’t seen a single redwing yet, and am concerned they will find it hard to survive if they discover that their usual food source has dried up. This bush not far from the holly is full of colourful berries, but I don’t know whether redwings will eat them. I think it’s a Nandina Domestica, or heavenly bamboo, but I don’t remember planting it.
