Today's the day ............................. of the winter solstice
The winter solstice for us in the Northern hemisphere, occurs when the Earth's North Pole reaches its maximum tilt away from the sun. It's the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year and is when the sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky.
It's a time of the year that has been celebrated for millennia. Apparently, thousands of people including pagans, druids and dancers headed to the Stonehenge Monument in Wiltshire today, to welcome in day break. The summer and winter solstices are the only day of the year when you are allowed to go right up to the stones.
Meanwhile in the garden here, the daffodils have decided that spring is on the way - and have broken the surface, to have a look for themselves ......................
