The problem with my being an idiot becomes obvious
Absolute agony during the night. Banished myself to the basement as my shoulder was hurting and my hips, despite being plied with Tylenol, felt like they were trying to pop out of my body. I am such an idiot. I knew that playing soccer was the stupidest thing I could do, went in resolved to not play soccer, then gave in to peer pressure within milliseconds of arriving. I am, as my brother would say, such a twat. Every time I moved, I hurt myself. I would like there, resignedly dropping off in the knowledge that if I moved onto my right side my shoulder would make me up, and if I moved to my left, it would be my hip. Not even the copious amounts of red wine dulled the frustration.
So, I had to make amends, and despite the temptation of not getting up at 5.45am to take Ottawacker Jr. to his tournament and warm him up at 6.30, I did the proper thing and forced myself to my feet, limping like a one-legged pirate on a rolling ship to the toilet, looked in the mirror and decided the day would only go downhill if I stayed. I rolled myself into my clothes and hobbled up the stairs to the kitchen, where Mrs. Ottawacker was making me coffee.
Ottawacker Jr. was playing for two teams in different age groups at the tournament. It’s a two-day affair, primarily in the mornings (what sort of numpty organises a tournament starting at 7am?), and he’s in the U14s and U13s. The U14s games were 30 minutes each, the U13s 40 minutes. Go figure. There was only one clash, and that was the 7am game. He had to play at 7am and finished at 10:40am.
The warm ups went pretty well – as I started kicking the ball to him, my hip clicked into gear – so I am not sure what really happened to make it so painful. The shoulder was the worst and there was a constant ache when I didn’t move it, which morphed into pain when I did.
7am - BU13 vs. OSU Gold (Field 1) – won 13-2
7:35am - BU14 vs OSU (Field 3) - (subs in immediately after 7am game ends) – won 7-1
8.10am - BU14 vs Nepean Hotspurs (Field 2) – won 2-0
9.20am - BU14 vs OSU Silver (Field 3) – lost 4-3
10am - BU13 vs. Richmond Hill (Field 1) – lost 3-2
He didn’t have his best day. He played well enough, but wasn’t on his usual top form. Having said that, there was a definite drop off in the team performances for the last 2 games. C’est la vie.
Anyway, we came home afterwards in the freezing rain. I cooked a hearty breakfast, then collapsed in an armchair and slept for an hour or so. Ottawacker Jr. was involved in the xBox universe, so I just left him to it. After that he decided he was going out to ride the buses for a while, and ended up at Carlingwood Mall, from where I got a call to ask if he could go to the Food Court and have something to eat. Oh to be young again.
Another early night for him as we have do it all again. There’s a 7am, start for U13s, who need a win to advance to the play offs. The U14s finished top of their group and so have their opening play off game at the same time. A pity, but cannot be helped…
