Snowman in Balerno

It was raining when we got up this morning. Within an hour snow was falling and continued for 3 hours or more giving a decent covering. Young O was desperate to get out with his Dad to build this impressive snowman.

Balerno is on the southern edge of Edinburgh civilisation at over 650 feet above sea level in the foothills of the Pentlands. Just a few miles away in Colinton there was very little.

There was a fair crowd of people around for the traditional New Year’s Day lunch of steak pie, neeps and tatties with a choice of deserts preceded and followed by mountains of washing up.

After they had all gone and the last plate, dish, glass and piece of cutlery had been put away we put on our boots and spikes and crunched our way around the Balerno loop in clear, frosty and icy conditions.

Thank you for all your good wishes for 2025, especially for our plans to move north this year.
