Speak To Me
It seemed to me the lake was speaking to me today. I don't know what it was trying to say, but I listened patiently.
It's a phenomenon I have reported previously and described as 'whaling' (which I know is an incorrect use of the term) or wailing. A sort of mournful, soft, musical, horn type of noise that I imagine whales might make when communicating. I can only think it is caused by the sheet ice shifting in the wind.
The lake surface remains only partially covered in ice, which surprises me considering how cold the nights are and that even daytime is well below freezing.
A line appeared today along the edge of the shore, where a day or so ago was open water.
