1941: William Randolph Hearst stops Citizen Kane ads
Quote Of The Day
"News is something somebody doesn't wanted printed; all else is advertising."
(William Randolph Hearst)
I guess William Randolph Hearst wasn't keen on those news posters for Citizen Kane.
A beautiful but cold and windy morning for a 22km run, my last one before returning to work tomorrow.
As I was running over Koshienhama bridge, I saw something rather strange. I watched a roughly cylindrical shaped white object fly along in front of the hills from almost as far left as you can see. It was difficult to judge this thing's size because I wasn't sure how far away it was. Although it didn't seem to have any wings, I could discern some flapping movement so I assumed it was a seagull.
I kept watching this object fly along in front of the hills until it landed on the ridge of one of the hills (the left hand side of the dark hill you can see behind the red bridge.) That was when I realised it couldn't be a seagull because this seagull would have to be about twenty meters long. I kept watching. This white cylindrical object continued sitting on the hill ridge for about one minute and then it started to disappear. Now I was running down Koshienhama bridge at this time so I thought possibly my perspective was causing the ridge of the hill to be coming up in front of the object, so I watched very carefully; no, the object was definitely getting fainter and fainter until it completely disappeared.
When I returned home I told K and V what I saw and, while I was in the shower, V found out what it quite possibly was. I'm pretty sure she nailed it. As I said, it is very windy so very likely it was farmer's cloth which, as you can see in this video, recently provided U.A.P. material for a couple of children in Japan. What I took for the object disappearing was quite likely the cloth unravelling in the wind and thereby becoming increasingly translucent. As V also pointed out, farmer's cloth could also be the origin of the ittan momen yokai. Interestingly, this Wikipedia link talks about a U.F.O. video taken in 2004 showing a cloth-shaped object flying above Mount Rokko. Mount Rokko is in this photo.
So, well done to V for being an effective Dana Scully to my Fox Mulder. I still want to believe though.
Welcome To The Pleasure Dome (Kudos to whoever gets the relevance of this song to On This Day In History.)
