Quote Of The Day
"The world ain't all sunshines and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward."
(Rocky Balboa)
Back to work today for two days of INSET before the children return on Monday. It was great to be back, and I'm looking forward to being back with the kids.
My latest read is awesome! To be honest, the previous book I read, The Last Human, turned out to be rather disappointing, with too many big numbers thrown around seemingly hoping to wow the reader (ten trillion beings dead, one hundred thousand civilisations destroyed etc) and too much abstract action (she held the galaxy and tossed it from one hand to the other); it's hard to have either an emotional or even cerebral connection when one cannot even conceptualise what one is reading. The Empire Of The Vampire, however, is very different; rich and detailed world building, three-dimensional characters who leap off the page, epic story telling on a mythic scale. I'm enthralled. I enjoyed Kristoff's Nevernight, but The Empire Of The Vampire is on another level. I am now into the last one hundred pages of the seven hundred plus page epic; I aim to finish it before Monday so that I can take a less bulky book to work in my briefcase.
