What On Earth...?

Went a walk over Braid Hill as far as the telecommunication masts then cut down towards Elf Loch over the golf course, where we spotted this peculiar thing, clearly designed by W. Heath Robinson. Apparently it is the bell the golfers ring when they have vacated the green to alert following players that it is safe to tee off.

And there was me thinking it was an old fire extinguisher! Huh!
