What is Wassailing?

Wassailing is the traditional English celebration that involves drinking, singing, and dancing to bless orchards and ensure a good harvest.
The word "wassail" comes from the Old Norse word for "good health"

Sam was beside herself and surprisingly I found it enjoyable and fun.
An hours drive got us to the National Trust at Pentire Point where it all took place. Intermittent showers couldn’t dampen the spirits of a quite enthusiastic set of Morris Dancers and Wassailers.
The ‘ceremony’ culminated with the dunking of strips of toast in cider and hanging them in the apple and pear trees with the left over cider poured over the tree roots. I did catch sight of one or two surreptitiously eating the cider soaked toast but I don’t think anyone minded.

Sam wore her cloak that Mrs S made for her and there were many compliments and some “cloak envy” but all in good fun. We adjourned to the NT coffee shop for a coffee and a wassailing sing-song all good fun.
We then meandered back home for some warming stew and an open fire to take away the chill.

Very happy Sam.
