Ice and fire

We still have another day to go of the longest cold spell this winter meanwhile over in LA fires continue to burn.
Our friend out there says the fires are 20 miles from her home and they can see the smoke.
My niece tells me a work colleague of hers in California had her house burnt and she has just had twins. The mind boggles. How do you begin to cope and recover ?
