Seen in the canal today
This Eastern Brown pelican visited our canal this afternoon. It probably had something to do with the fact that our neighbor across the canal who is a charter fishing captain, was releasing some of his leftover live bait into the river! I also saw 2-3 Great white egrets, a Great Blue heron, a couple of little blue herons and then this pelican, all looking for that live bait! I even saw the pelican dive his or her bill into the water and scoop up a fish. It was quite entertaining to see all this action.
Pelicans do not visit us daily like the other birds, or even once a week. But they do come by occasionally and it is such a treat. The pelican is Steve's favorite bird! I looked the bird up and read more about them here. The article leads me to believe the this bird's coloring is due to breeding plumage.
