Lone stone man in the desert

Since 2014, sculptures of lone humans have appeared in remote areas of Namibia. They are made of local stone and held together with wire. We met one on our evening drive.

The day started with a dawn shoot in a beautiful area. Then breakfast and time to rest until lunch. The food has continued to be exceptional.

Saskia talked to us about Namibia, its history and topography. I had no idea about the origin of the diamonds being South Africa. A railway worker found one on the ground. Once it was verified, the rush to find more started. Now all the work is with dredgers off the coast.

Our afternoon drive took us through bare, stony land surrounded by dramatic hills and low mountains.

We ended on a raised knoll where another vehicle was waiting. We saw it from a distance and I was indignant that in all this space, we should meet other tourists. It was a vehicle from this camp with chairs, drinks and nibbles for our sundowner!

At dinner I was presented with a bottle of champagne by the company, Ultimate Safaris, whose rep had arrived after a 2 day drive from Windhoek. He, Jason, is our guide for the rest of the trip. The bottle has been engraved with a birthday message for me. We all shared the contents, but it is a very heavy bottle to bring home……

It’s been another brilliant day.
