James Paterson

What follows is a lot of family history stuff so don't feel obliged to read it!

James Paterson was my great, great grandfather, 1828-1900. James's  parents were Robert Paterson and Margaret Bain (Bayne?) who married in Paisley in 1823.

James was a doctor - the main blip is a scan of his graduation certificate from the University of Glasgow. It even has a handwritten erratum correcting the misspelling of Paterson.

James  married  Agnes Taylor in Govan on 08.10.1853.  Agnes tragically died on 18.02.1857 aged 28. Her parents were David Taylor and Agnes Rollo. Agnes is buried in Sighthill Cemetery in Glasgow.

James and and his second wife Ellen Chapman  (my great, great grandmother) met in London where, at the time of their marriage (09.02.1860) James was living at 91 Great Tower(?) Street and Ellen at 64 Great Prescot(?) Street.

They married at St Dunstan in the East which is no longer a functioning  church but what looks like a lovely garden. Their fathers were Robert Paterson, a Commissioning?? Agent and Thomas Chapman, a teacher. The two extras are scans of the certificates admitting James to membership of the Royal Society of Surgeons of England and the Society of Apothecaries of England and Wales. Other details of James's life in London are a mystery to me, as is Ellen's early life.

By the 1861 census James and Ellen were living on Dumbarton Road, Glasgow.

James and Ellen had a big family:
Agnes, Ellen, Eliza (Lizzie), Robert (my great grandfather), Thomas, James, John, William. The household also always had one or two servants.
I believe that theirs was a musical family.

James and Ellen’s subsequent addresses were:
·        Rose Vale (?), Partick (1871 census)
·        Hayburn Bank, Dumbarton Road, Partick (1881 census)
·        Hayburn Bank Cottage, Dumbarton Road, Partick (1891 census)
·        Hayburn Bank, Dumbarton Road, Partick (Ellen, now widowed 1901 census)
So it looks as if they didn’t stray far once they had returned to Glasgow.

I have more work to do but I'm delighted to have found these certificates which are held (very tightly folded hence the creases) by the Royal Society of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. All three societies have been so helpful.

This weekend's fun is in the balance. We have people travelling to visit - or hoping to travel tomorrow. Who knows what the storm will bring though. Additionally last night both Cameraman and I brewed up a virus. You know how these things go so I'm not going to give the details but the whole thing was/is ghastly.

I've managed some hot water this morning which is progress. I went to bed about 18:30 last night so you'll know why I missed so much blip.

Stay safe everyone. Everything is cancelled here and schools are closed.
