And this is my dad
Today he would have had his 110 birthday. In this army photo, taken in 1940, he is 25 - so 5 years younger than my son is now. What a different life he had then. He didn’t want to fight so he became an ambulance driver. On the back it says he was in the No6 Motor Ambulance Convoy RASC.
Like most people who lived through the war, he almost never spoke of it. He used to wake up shouting in the night - my mum told me he was ‘worried about work’ She told me he was on the beach at Dunkirk for the whole five days, helping the injured. Bombs falling all the time, he must have felt extreme fear. He was the most gentle man you could imagine, but struggled a bit and was never lighthearted
