Before there was colour
Yesterday I opened a file to see whether it held anything important. The first item in the file was this newspaper clipping of the four participants in the 6 mile race at the University of Otago annual athletics championships. It was entry on the day, and I decided to have a go. I knew I could run the distance, although I had no idea how fast. I stayed with the leading group for the first couple of miles before slowing. I am pleased to say that I did finish. My vague memory of that race is that I was 4th. And that I was last.
The leader of this group, and the eventual winner, was Barry Everitt, who competed at national level. Because we were running on grass he was well short of his best time; even so he lapped me twice (I think).
