Behind Curtain #1
Door quilts are an old device to deflect drafts, the original "draft dodgers". This one is on the door to the barn which is frigid in the winter. "From Asia, it came to Europe at a remote date. It is known to have been in use in Europe in the 4th century and was probably introduced much earlier. Like so many other domestic plenishings, it reached England by way of France, where it appears to have been originally called rideau de Porte (literally, "door curtain")." The cross stitched sampler on the wall was done by my mother and always hung by the door in our house. It reads, "Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." That suits my house which is very close to the side of the road which most mid-19th century farmhouses were.
