Stuff and Nonsense

Spotted Redshank #16

We had a good day at RSPB Leighton Moss. It was a cold, but beautifully sunny day for which we were very thankful.
Some nice birds about - plenty of ducks including some handsome pintails, widgeon and shovelers, a few distant Marsh Harriers, and this solitary spotted redshank.
In winter, it's not so easy to separate a common redshank from a spotted redshank as the plumage is quite similar, especially when they are on their own. For me the longer, thinner, straighter beak was the thing that made me wonder. I asked a few other people in the hide that were down the same end as me and they weren't very sure. So I kept asking people until I got the answer I wanted - Ha ha ha!  I hope I'm correct after all my doubts.
