Nautical Language
This is the book I’m reading and really enjoying it. It was published in 2023, was on the NY Times Best Seller list and Barnes and Noble anointed it Book Of The Year • It’s the true story of a British vessel that leaves England in 1740 on a secret mission during an Imperial War with Spain • I’m familiar with the story as I’ve seen a couple of documentaries about the ship The Wager, but David Grann is known for his research and provides much more detail to the story • On page 35 it states “During the age of sail, where wind-powered vessels were the only bridge across the vast oceans, nautical language was so pervasive that it was adopted by those on terra firma.” • Here are some examples: Under the weather; Toe the line; Pipe down; Scuttlebutt; Three sheets to the wind; Turn a blind eye • Who knew! • Enjoy your weekend! • Peace & Love
