Mono Month Challenge 2025

The name Newby Wiske has Norse origins, this area was influenced by the Viking settlers. Newby in Old Norse means new farm or new settlement. Wiske is the Old English name given to the River Wiske flowing under this bridge and that means wet place or marshy land.

The area is known for its flooding especially when the River Swale is overflowing. When that floods near Morton-on-Swale Northallerton and Leeming Bar are cut off from each other and involves huge detours.
