Doune Bassoon Quartet at Dunblane

This afternoon we drove over from Callendar to Dunblane for a concert by the Doune Bassoon Quartet, as blipped. Our friend Peter Wesley (left) plays the contrabassoon and the bassoon* in the group. The other players are Heather Brown, Kath Nagl, and Graeme Brown (no relation).

The first, and more serious, part of the concert was held in the choir of the cathedral. The quartet played a series of pieces in chronological order of composition with Peter telling amusing anecdotes from his musical career between each one:

Three dances by Praetorious
Le phenix by Corrette
Holsworthy church bells by Wesley
Crisantemi by Puccini
Farewell to Stromness by Maxwell Davies

After a break for tea/coffee and biscuits, the second - and less serious - part of the concert took place in the hall next to the cathedral. The programme continued with:

March of a marionette by Gounod
Rumple of the Bailey by Horovitz
The bassoon song by Ashlyn - with brilliant singing by Kath Nagl
Tea for two by Yeomans
Clog dance by Herold - during which Peter 'danced' in real clogs
Danzon no. 2 by Marquez
Bassoonist's holiday by Anderson

After the concert, Mr hazelh and I drove up the road for tea, cake, and chat with Peter and his wife Jean at their house. This was a jolly conclusion to a wonderful afternoon of musical entertainment.

Before our trip to Dunblane, we stomped around the Bracklinn Falls circular walking route. Afterwards we enjoyed supper in the bistro back at our hotel.
