Sweet 1963 Foden Tate and Lyle 8-Wheeler tanker

Well hello peeps, weathers been pretty good do far this weekend hope its good where you are.

Todays blip is a Tate & Lyle sugar delivery vacuum tanker, T&L's first choice for their new 14 ton tankers in 1950 was AEC but they switched to Gardner-engined Fodens mainly because the AECs had softer springs that resulted in them leaning out of vertical whilst being loaded, they were loaded with the big body behind the cab raised up in the tipped position and sugar poured into the silver hatch way. The Fodens, with their stiffer underslung springs were less prone to leaning, reducing the risk of spillage.

The beutiful livery on T&L tankers was created by the London based DRU (Design Research Unit) who were noted for their excellent work especially during the 1950s. They also came up with the British Rail logo and signage for Watney's pubs."

Foden Trucks was a British truck and bus manufacturing company which has its origins in Sandbach, Cheshire in 1856. PACCAR acquired the company in 1980, and ceased to use the marque name in 2006

The S21 was initially nicknamed both "Spaceship" and "Sputnik" by the commercial vehicle press, although it was briefly known as the "Sabrina" (1950s English glamour model who progressed to a minor movie career. Her main claim to fame was her hourglass figure of prodigious breasts coupled with a tiny 17" waist.) in the early 1960s, while other people gave it the "Mickey Mouse" nickname.
