Hell's Gate
Another full (and hot) day. No driving required except by the captain of the catamaran that took us on a six hour tour of the Macquarie harbour and Gordon River. Main shows the entrace to the harbour from the Southern Ocean. It was notorious for shipwrecks and still needs a careful hand on the wheel. The lighthouse is called Entrance Island Lighthouse. Normally the cruise doesn't venture far through the gap but the conditions were perfect today and we headed quite a way out into the ocean. First extra shows us turning to return back into the harbour. We then headed to Sarah Island for a guided tour of the former penal colony. Second extra shows one of the jettys and the view to the western highlands. After that we were glad to get back into the air conditioning or catch the breeze from the deck. We continued south and cruised slowly up the Gordon river while lunch was provided. At the turnaround point was another guided walk through the rainforest. Then it was a calm cruise back to Strahan. The last extra shows the port area at dusk.
