Stable Storage
Usually storage units are situated in fairly souless business parks, faceless places to store treasures, junk, sentiment and memories and occasionally used for expediency. Guilt is always an accompanying feeling. Why am I keeping this stuff? Who for? Will I ever use it again or will I even remember I have it if I do need it? Surely I've spent more on the storage than the value of the things.
So, when I last moved house and needed a place to keep my sons' things and all those items that might come in handy later, I was very pleased to find Croften Hall Stables, not least because it assuages my pangs of hoading conscience.
Croften Hall is not quite on my doorstep but the half hour drive is well worth the while as it makes a chore into a pleasant morning out. There's a walk around the fishing pond along the lane, a cheese-making business behind and a coffee shop to breathe a sigh of relief in as well as feeling you've got a bit of ownership of a beautiful spot.
Today all the unsorted family trees, photos and slides were tenderly entombed 'until we have time' and for once a few things came out, for the tip. This last was not a complete success as the two council recycling units did not have room for some of the items. They are now lurking in the boot of my car sending out sub-conscious waves - 'Keep me! Keep me!'
I must not succumb.
