Another hope fulfilled
If you have read an earlier blip, you will know that I fell in love with weaver birds back in 1973, when I first visited Botswana. After my delight at watching the masked weavers, I was hoping that we would see the sociable weavers.
They build large communal nests. Males and females are involved and a noisy community results. The nest become so large that they can bring down large branches from trees.
Today, on a long drive out in the Wolverdans Nature Reserve, we saw loads of these nests. If you look at my main image, you can glimpse smaller nests in the distance. The oryx was leaving in disgust!
I managed to catch a few photos of the weavers themselves. It's not a great shot but it pleases me enormously.
The second extra shows a typical view of a lone tree against the bleak landscape. Note that there are hopeful clouds in the sky. You see clouds in Namibia only at this time of year and not in the winter when most people visit. Note the desert track we drove along!
We had lunch today at the Hard Rock Café, which is a space under a great pile of rocks. A table was erected with a cloth and we ate royally.
This was our last full day. Tomorrow we drive to Windhoek.
