Omega

We had a really interesting talk today at our Social Club. It was by the owner of the north's most infamous factory, Omega Proteins, aka The Pong Factory.

I cannot even begin here to describe the amazing way this family-run business has grown from a mink farm to an group of companies able to donate a lot of money to charity.

What they do here in Penrith is take animal waste products from abattoirs and turn it into additives for pet foods, commercial fish foods and fuel. They are visited by representatives from around the world who want to see the innovative way this business has developed along a hygienic process of recycling and reusing its own resources.

Dose it produce a pong? Well, on some days there is a smell in Penrith, but far less than there used to be and no-one mentions other possible causes.

I am sure this firm is on track to become even cleaner in the near future. It was so good of the very busy owner to spend time with us today. My blip is of the oils and meal powders they produce from carcasses we only use a third of in our butcher's departments.
