The High Line
Vik realised there was an amazing bagel shop near our hotel and was out the door to get a breakfast bagel even while remembering we were meeting Anu and Marty for Brunch. I had a modest buttered bagel but he had The Works and it was apparently delicious. We met Anu at Upland an upscale relaxed restaurant in a lovely room next door to the old Armoury. The Armoury itself looks very closed up but is a huge old building so someone must have plans for it. We noticed that Herman Melville wrote Billy Budd next door. They don’t have blue plaque equivalent so that was a rare acknowledgement of cultural history.
We decided to walk the High Line and to start at the far end for once. Annoyingly a lot of the entry points were closed so we wandered around a lot, with others, looking for a way on. Once up there we were fairly shocked by how cold it was. Of course all the herbaceous plants were either died back or desiccated but I rather loved its winters look. Quite a lot of it was being restored or repaired though so it wasn’t as enthralling as last time I was on it. I do hope they look after it. I like this picture though, Vik looking out and a bit of art.
We came down into the now ludicrously upscale Meat Packing district, even more than when I was here last, and scuttled gratefully into Soho House for tea to get out of the cold.
Dinner was Peruvian at Artesano which was a bit too quiet when we arrived but which had livened up by the time we left.
